Polyphosphates are used as dispersants for aqueous based emulsion paints as they allow higher loadings and easier handling of the aqueous slurry. Factors which affect dispersant properties such as high pH and high ionic concentration are detrimental to the overall stability of the system and can be controlled using phosphates.
