White phosphorus, or yellow phosphorus as it’s commonly referred to, is produced by Thermphos International BV in an electrothermal process. Of all the forms of elemental phosphorus, white phosphorus is the most reactive. It is the parent compound for a very wide range of chemistry. Starting from phosphorus’ first derivatives, such as chlorides, sulphides and phosphoric acid, a world of organophosphorus compounds and defined phosphates is accessible.
The product is a waxy solid which melts at 44 °C. It is available in several grades of purity.
