Phosphorus chlorides

Thermphos International BV offers three phosphorus chlorides: Phosphorus trichloride (PCl3), phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3) and phosphorus pentachloride (PCl5). They are the main intermediates for the production of organophosphorus compounds.

Phosphorus trichloride (PCl3)

Phosphorus trichloride is produced from high-purity white phosphorus and chlorine, giving a very pure product. It can be reacted with organic compounds to organophosporus compounds with a trivalent P atom, such as phosphites and phosphonates. Important application fields of these are crop protection agents, plasticizers, antiscale and chelating agents, and flame retardants. It is also a chlorination agent and a precursor for phosphorus pentachloride, phosphorus oxychloride and phosphorous acid.

The product is a colourless liquid at room temperature. It is soluble in several common organic solvents.

Phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3)

Phosphorus oxychloride is obtained from PCl3 and oxygen, giving a product of high purity. It is the starting material for the production of phosphate triesters. Applications of these include P-based flame retardants and plasticizers. It is also applied as dehydration or chlorination agent.

The product is a colourless liquid at room temperature. It is soluble in several common organic solvents.

Phosphorus pentachloride (PCl5)

Phosphorus pentachloride is produced from PCl3 and chlorine, giving a high-purity product. It is used as mild chlorination agent, for instance in the production of pharmaceuticals. It is also used in the manufacture of battery electrolytes and in other special applications.

The product is a fine, light yellow-greenish powder.
