Polyphosphoric Acid

Title:Polyphosphoric Acid
Formula:H(n+2)PnO(3n+1)
Synonyms:Poly Phosphoric Acid ; Pyrophosphoric Acid; Tetraphosphoric Acid; Superphosphoric Acid
Cas number:8017-16-1
Einecs number:232-417-0
Description:The term polyphosphoric acid refers to concentrated grades of phosphoric acid (H3PO4) above 95%. At these high concentrations, the separate PO4 units are polymerized. Thermphos supplies a wide range of high-purity grades between 97 and 118, where the number designates the apparent H3PO4 concentration.

Each grade contains several species of different chain length which are in equilibrium with each other. Higher concentrations have a longer average chain length. The product is made by concentration of orthohosphoric acid, or by dissolution of P2O5  in water.
The product has similar applications to P2O5  but has the advantage that it is a liquid, which allows for easier handling and dosing.
All grades of PPA are highly viscous, colourless transparent liquids.
Thermphos International supplies a wide range of grades. We refer to the corresponding information sheets for further information. Please contact us if you have any special requirements.

Applications:Production of acid phosphates. Metal treatment. Organic syntheses. Pharmaceuticals. Phosphate esters. Asphalt and bitumen additive. Dehydrating agent. Ring closing reagent. Reaction medium and solvent. Spinning solvent.
Properties:Highly viscous, transparent colorless or light yellow liquid.
Shelf life:1 year if properly stored (see Safety Data Sheet for storage instructions)
